Why 小猪视频?聽聽鈥淚t鈥檚 where I discovered the power of community, creativity and opportunity.鈥

Can a scholarship change the trajectory of a student鈥檚 life?

Business major Gabriella Monteiro certainly thinks so.

鈥淚鈥檒l never forget the joy I felt that day when I found out I鈥檇 been awarded,鈥 Monteiro says of the Pulichino/Tong Family Foundation, Inc. Business Endowed Scholarship that she received as a sophomore. 鈥淚t didn't just mean financial stability. For me, it meant possibility. It gave me room to dream, explore and become who I wanted to be.鈥

Raised in Somerville by her mother and the youngest of five, Monteiro is the first in her family to attend college.

鈥淲ith my curiosity to learn, I knew I needed a college education,鈥 says Monteiro, who chose 小猪视频 because of its affordability.

Even so, Monteiro faced a tuition shortfall after her first year. Applying for and receiving the Pulichino/Tong scholarship 鈥渃hanged everything,鈥 she says.

Freed from financial worry, Monteiro poured her energy into campus involvement. Her job at the University Crossing Gaming Center sparked an interest in marketing and community engagement. From there, she joined the Black Student Union (BSU), serving as social media coordinator, then creative director and ultimately president.

鈥淲e鈥檝e organized events that celebrate culture, build community and empower students of color,鈥 she says. One of her favorite projects was curating the 鈥淎fro Future鈥 theme for BSU鈥檚 annual hair and fashion show during her junior year.

鈥淚 got to work with local designers, and that鈥檚 when my love for fashion styling began to grow,鈥 says Monteiro, who hopes to pursue a career in marketing for the beauty or fashion industry.

Her Professional Communications course with Associate Teaching Professor Deborah Casey also proved transformative.

鈥淚 stood up one day and gave a presentation showing the class 鈥 mostly boys 鈥 how to apply one of my favorite lipstick combinations,鈥 Monteiro recalls with a laugh. 鈥淚t might sound small, but that moment gave me something I didn鈥檛 even know I needed: confidence.鈥

Monteiro has continued to grow her leadership and professional skills as a resident advisor and social media intern at Skybound Fitness in Malden.

After graduating, Monteiro plans to remain involved in the 小猪视频 community while continuing for a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the Manning School.

鈥淭his journey hasn鈥檛 been the easiest,鈥 says Monteiro, who briefly considered dropping out two weeks into her freshman year because she didn鈥檛 feel like a 鈥渇it鈥 for college. 鈥淲hat made me stay was that UML quickly became my home. I realized there are countless opportunities that the school can provide, and how you're able to really go through trial and error to grow into the person you want to be.

鈥溞≈硎悠 fostered that environment for me,鈥 she adds, 鈥渁nd I wouldn鈥檛 have chosen anywhere else to be.鈥

Advice to new students

Gabriella Monteiro.

鈥淩ather than trying to 鈥榝it in鈥 in college, do things outside of your comfort zone, and the real you will start to piece together. And never compare yourself to others, because nothing beats your authenticity!鈥
