As a first-year student, Suhani Karki worried that she wouldn鈥檛 find her community. That quickly changed when she joined the Pre-Dental Society student club and MassPIRG, a statewide nonprofit working to make social change.
鈥淭hese initial experiences helped me break out of my introverted shell and build my confidence,鈥 says Karki, who is majoring in Applied Biomedical Sciences, Pre-Med/Pre-Health Option, to prepare for dental school.
鈥淭he Applied Biomedical Sciences program bridges science and health care, emphasizing how biological systems connect to overall well-being,鈥 says Karki, who commutes from home in Andover. 鈥淭his major allows me to study human health in a focused, applied way, which strengthens my understanding of holistic patient care.鈥
In her sophomore year, Karki became president of the Pre-Dental Society, and she led initiatives later that educated the community about oral health.聽
鈥淚n one event, our group educated more than 80 elementary school students about oral hygiene and preventative care,鈥 says Karki, whose club earned the Outstanding Community Service honor at the Student Leadership Awards.聽
As an Immersive Scholar, Karki studied abroad in San Sebasti谩n, Spain, gaining a global perspective on health care and culture. That experience opened the door to more opportunities through the Honors College, where she worked as both an informational and orientation peer, helping new students design their own honors pathways. She completed a $3,000 research fellowship with the Department of Psychology鈥檚 Health Advancement and Resilience in Pediatrics (HARP) Lab and later presented her findings at the Student Research Symposium.
Karki is grateful for the support of faculty, staff and her classmates for creating an experience that helped her learn and grow as a person.
鈥淓very opportunity at UML, from research and study abroad to leadership and mentorship, has shaped me into a more compassionate, confident and well-rounded student,鈥 she says.聽 鈥淓ach experience built on the last, preparing me to bridge science and service in meaningful ways.鈥
